Dr. Liz Beaven, EdD, has been actively involved in Waldorf education since 1985. Her experience spans class teaching, school leadership, Board service, adult education, lecturing, writing, research, and national and international conference presentations. Plus, she is the parent of two Waldorf alums and is now viewing questions of education and the future through the lens of a grandparent. She took an early interest in the expansion of US Waldorf education from an independent school movement into public schools, and currently serves as the first Executive Director of the Alliance for Public Waldorf Education, a role that includes support for over 60 schools across the United States, engagement with the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America, and wider advocacy on a range of education
issues. She is a member of the Pedagogical Section Council of North America. Liz is also involved in work towards strengthening equitable access to quality early childhood education through membership of the Trust for Learning’s national Ideal Learning Round Table. [In addition to her work in Waldorf education, Liz has extensive experience in adult education including as an associate professor then Provost at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco. Her experience in independent and public schools and higher education has ensured ongoing engagement in questions of the goals and purpose of education and how it is best supported and
funded.]
I am now in my 4th year on the AWSNA Board of Trustees, following 9 years on the AWSNA Leadership Council. I spent the final 12 years of my professional career working as the School Administrator for the Calgary Waldorf School, where I also served on the Board of Directors for 20 years. I am an alumna parent at both the Calgary and Toronto Waldorf Schools. Before my Waldorf career, I worked for 25 years as a social worker, counsellor, mediator, social researcher, University educator, and published academic. Much of my time was with children
and their families in medical settings and with bereaved parents. My formal training (BA, MA, MSW) is in Social Work and Sociology. My home is Calgary, Alberta, which lies at the heart of Treaty 7 Territory: at the confluence of the Bow River and the Elbow River, it has long been
called Moh’kinsstsis by the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa by the Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i by Tsuut’ina.
